Weather Outlook for Monday, March 12, 2012

Monday

Severe Weather
There is a threat for severe weather over Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and the Lower Mississippi Valley through this afternoon.   An upper-level trough is lifting into the Great Lakes region and will provide strong, but mostly meridional, wind shear for ongoing storms.  However, the absence of greater moisture and instability will limit the overall severity of storms.  Cold temperatures aloft will yield steep lapse rates and this could support a low-end tornado threat in addition to small hail and damaging winds.  Further south, greater instability will be present, with mid to upper 60’s dewpoints nosing toward the MS/TN border by late afternoon.  While lapse rates and wind shear will be much weaker, a few storms may reach severe limits during the afternoon hours and pose a threat for hail and damaging winds from Louisiana into Alabama.

Winter Weather
A winter storm will impact the Northwest today with moderate to heavy snow expected across the mountains from Washington into northern California.  Some locations could see up to a foot or more of snow through Tuesday morning.  Snow is expected to continue over the next couple of days providing additional significant accumulations.

Excessive Rainfall
No excessive rainfall is anticipated.

Tuesday

Severe Weather
No severe weather is anticipated for Tuesday.   Upper-level flow will remain fairly marginal across the southern half of the country, with a weak ridge of high pressure over the Upper Midwest.  A short wave trough from Monday will shift into the New England region with only light rain in the forecast for the Eastern Seaboard.

Winter Weather
Elsewhere, moderate to heavy snowfall will continue for the Northwest.   Height falls will overspread the northern Rockies as several shortwave impulses maintain convection for the higher elevations.  8-12 inches of snow can be expected.

Excessive Rainfall
No excessive rainfall is anticipated.
