iMap Weather Mobile (Android) General FAQ
1. How do I load the iMap Weather
application? The best way to do so is to visit the Android
Market on your G1 handset. Search for weather and click on iMap
Weather to download the application to your handset.
2. Why am I getting an
"application failed to download" message? There are a
number of reasons why you may receive this message. This could
result from the carrier's network failure, congestion on the
network, operating system problems in the phone or lack of
applications space. You should check your connectivity, try exiting
the applications menu, and then reload the application. If problems
persist, go to support.wdtinc.com to download a
web form to report the problem and we will get back to you as soon
as we can.
3. How long should it take to
load iMap Weather? iMap Weather is a 150KB packed download
and takes just a few seconds to load and a few more seconds to
unpack. Download time is affected by whether you are downloading
over a Wi-Fi network, a 3G network or an EDGE network (see
questions 8 and 9 below).
4. How much does iMap
cost? iMap Weather is free to users at this time.
5. How much memory does the
application take up on my G1? Can I remove it easily? Once
unpacked, the iMap Weather application takes up 552KB of space in
your handset. Your applications menu allows you to see how much
memory is being used to store each application on your handset. You
can easily uninstall any application by following the instructions
on your applications menu.
6. Can I get automatic updates of
the weather information? Yes. Whenever you select current
conditions/weather, you will receive updates every 30 minutes if
you are stationary. You can always use the refresh menu option to
update the current conditions for an immediate update.
7. How often does the weather
data update? How recent is it? The current conditions
update once an hour near the top of the hour unless the weather
changes significantly warranting an updated observation between
hours.
8. Will iMap Weather "follow me"
and know my location? Yes. iMap Weather knows where you
are based on either your location within cells in the cellular
network, through a process of "triangulation" or through the GPS
functionality in your phone if you are looking for greater
precision. Please know that using GPS will likely use up battery
life at a greater rate than through network triangulation.
9. Is this US weather only or
global weather? Will it work the same everywhere? iMap
Weather is optimized for US locations only. It is possible to
request weather while in other countries, but this requires
entering latitude and longitude coordinates. International weather
access will be a feature of iMap Weather Mobile 2.0.
10. Do I need to be in an
EDGE/GPRS or 3G/WCDMA zone to use the application? No. If
you are in a WiFi hotspot, iMap Weather will work well too. You do
not have to be connected to the cellular network.
11. How fast is the data
transferred (Kbps) Technically, WiFi typically transfers
at about 100Mbps, EDGE/2.75G at around 384 kbps, and 3G/UMTS/-EVDO
at around 3.6Mbps. In reality, connection speed is a product of
network throughput and congestion and can differ greatly, with
resulting in different network speeds and application downloads at
different times.
12. Can I see lightning data
within iMap Weather? iMap Weather allows you to display on
the map the 25 most recent lightning strikes in your area.
13. How do I get watches and
warnings information? To see if a watch or warning is
active for a particular location, click and hold the current
conditions entry for that location and select the "Watches &
Warnings" item from the context menu. A list of active watches and
warnings will be displayed and you can see the full text of the
event by clicking on it in the list. If there are no watches or
warnings you will get an information dialog. After dismissing the
dialog, hit the back key to go back to what you were doing
previously.
14. Where does the weather data
come from? WDT is one of the world's leading providers of
weather information. WDT data is derived from the world's leading
public and private data sources.
15. How do you compare to other
mobile weather services? We believe our iMap Weather
application for Android is the best on the market. Unlike other
applications, our application provides unique "follow-me" data to
supply you with the information you need when you want it, how you
want it. Our radar, for example, is the most rich and detailed of
all mobile weather applications and our user interface is the most
intuitive.
iMap Weather Mobile (Android) Troubleshooting
1. What can I do if I'm on a
slow network and get tired of waiting for radar images to down
load? If you want to move the map again or want to cancel
a radar image download for any reason, just hit the back button
once.
2. What can I do if I'm on a
slow network and get tired of waiting for the current conditions to
update? You can hit the back button to cancel the update.
Because the list was being updated, you may get the splash screen
(indicating an empty list) after canceling the download. When
you're ready to see the current conditions again, hit the Refresh
button from the menu.
3. What can I do if I'm on a
slow network and get tired of waiting for a forecast to
download? You guessed it. You can hit the back button once
to cancel and once more to go back to the previous screen.
4. Why does the radar data
refresh when I only move the map a very small distance?
This refresh occurs so that the application can verify that the
radar images you are looking at are the most current available. If
new tiles are available, they are downloaded and displayed. If no
new tiles are available the images are refreshed from the SD card
cache, which ensures a quick refresh.
5. Why does the map re-center
to the location of the "follow-me" icon even after I move the
map? In "follow-me" mode the map will always re-center the
map on your current location. If you want to scroll the map to look
at activity elsewhere you will need to first turn-off the
"follow-me" feature of the map.
6. How do I remove a location
from my Current Conditions list? You can remove any
location you entered by using the context menu (touch and hold the
entry to bring up the context menu) and selecting remove, but the
information about the current conditions for your current location
are always displayed at the top of the list and cannot be
removed.
7. Can I get a terrain map like
Google maps has? The terrain map is not currently part of
the Android Google Maps API.
8. Is the time shown on the
storm map always in the time zone of my location in my list or
where I am located? All times are displayed in the time
zone of your current location. In the current conditions display
the time of the update in the time zone of a location in the list
is displayed in parenthesis after the local time (if different).
